Ahmed Bakry is an Architect, Urban Designer, and Regional planner. He acquired his B.Sc. from Ain Shams University, Egypt, Urban Design and Planning Department (UPD) in July 2012. His accumulative ranking was the first in the department with a very good grade and distinction for the graduation project. Accordingly, he was hired as a lecturer assistant at Ain Shams University for a civil job. Afterwards, he joined the Integrated Urbanism and Sustainable Design double master’s program (IUSD), between Stuttgart University in Germany and Ain Shams University in Egypt from 2013 to 2015. His master's research was about integrating local ethnic groups in the process of regional planning, trying to bridge the gap between the governments, planners, and societies. His final M.Sc. grade was Excellent.
Bakry started his PhD at the Institute of Geography, University of Heidelberg, between April 2019 and July 2023. The Ministry of Higher Education in Egypt and the DAAD in Germany funded his PhD research. In his PhD, he addressed the Spatial Regional Development, Networks, and Territorial Integration of the European cross-border regions, especially from a cultural dimension. He developed an analytical framework that enables a better understanding of planning processes in cross-border regions and developed models for measuring the cultural networks and level of cultural integration across the national borders, for the first time in academia. His final grade was very good 'Magna Cum Laude'. During his PhD period, he presented at several academic conferences worldwide and published several papers in Q1 and Q2 highly academic journals.
Besides his academic distinction, Bakry participated in and led several Urban and Architectural competitions and projects in Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Between 2015 and 2019, he worked as a lecturer assistant at UPD providing tutoring for several projects for Undergraduate students. Also, he joined IUSD Lab, Cairo as a tutor for development projects for post-graduate students and a researcher on research projects concerning Spatial Planning and Development for informal areas and risk zones.
Now, he works as a lecturer at the University of Kassel in Germany in the Department of Economics of Urban and Regional Development. He provides lectures, projects, and seminars for Post-graduate and Undergraduate students in Sustainable Development and Regional Planning for metropolitan regions. Moreover, he is leading a research project concerning cross-border regional governance networks, cross-border cooperation, and cross-border space systems.
