Under the auspices of the Faculty of Engineering at Ain Shams University, the Egypt Solid Waste Management Center of Excellence organized the National Conference on "Organic Waste Management in Egypt" on Monday, September 21, 2026, in cooperation with the German Environment Agency (UBA) and the University of Rostock in Germany, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Sherine El-Agroudy, Director of the Center.

The conference was held as part of the project "Focus and Dialogue on Organic Waste: Egypt and Jordan", funded by the Advisory Assistance Programme (AAP) of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment and under the supervision of the German Environment Agency (UBA). The project is part of a joint cooperation initiative between Egypt, Jordan, and Germany, involving the University of Rostock in Germany, Ain Shams University in Egypt, and the Jordan University of Science and Technology, in coordination with the Waste Management Regulatory Authority in Egypt and the Ministry of Environment in Jordan.

The conference was attended by a number of leaders from the Faculty of Engineering at Ain Shams University, including Prof. Dr. Amr Shaat, Dean of the Faculty, and Prof. Dr. Marwa Abu El-Fotouh, Vice Dean for Postgraduate Studies and Research. The event also brought together several international partners and experts, including Ms. Anja Schwitze from the German Environment Agency (UBA), Prof. Dr. Abdullah Nasour, Professor of Waste and Resource Management at the University of Rostock and Project Coordinator, and Dr. Roman Maletz from Dresden University. A number of local experts and organizations also participated, including Mr. Ahmed Khayal from the Waste Management Regulatory Authority, Dr. Saber Mahmoud from the Agricultural Research Center, and Mr. Ahmed Tawfik from Nahdet Misr Environmental Services Company, along with representatives of governmental, academic, research, and private-sector organizations.

The conference focused on the key challenges and opportunities in organic waste management in Egypt, including organic waste valorization, resource recovery, compost quality assurance, and methane emission reduction. It also featured presentations on the project's key findings and provided an opportunity to exchange expertise, strengthen cooperation among governmental, academic, research, and private-sector stakeholders, and support efforts toward developing sustainable organic waste management practices in Egypt.

The conference program also included a visit to the Egypt Solid Waste Management Center of Excellence (ESWMCE), where participants learned about the Center's role in supporting the development of the waste management system, research and development, and specialized services in this field.
