Ain Shams University Faculty of Engineering Hosts Workshop on Shaping Safe Transport Systems in Collaboration with Coventry University

As part of the activities of the “Shaping Safe Transport Systems Through Education” project, supported by the British Council through the Transnational Education (TNE) Exploratory Grants programme, the Faculty of Engineering at Ain Shams University hosted a specialized workshop focusing on the development of safe transport systems, within the framework of the academic collaboration between the Faculty and Coventry University in the United Kingdom.

The project is implemented through a partnership between the Faculty of Engineering at Ain Shams University, represented by Dr. Mostafa Tawfik, Director of the Mobility Research Center and Assistant Professor in the Public Works Department, and Dr. Ramy Sheltout, representing Coventry University in the United Kingdom. The workshop brought together faculty members and teaching assistants specializing in Transport Planning and Traffic Engineering, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate students. Representatives of Knowledge International University in Egypt, as an associate partner in the project, also participated, along with representatives from the industry sector and the British Council.

The workshop was inaugurated by Prof. Dr. Marwa Abou El-Fotouh Khalifa, Vice Dean of the Faculty for Postgraduate Studies and Research, who welcomed the participants and emphasized the importance of international collaboration in supporting scientific research and developing educational programmes in the fields of transportation and road safety. She highlighted the role of such cooperation in preparing qualified professionals capable of keeping pace with global developments in the field.

The workshop addressed several key topics related to road safety, including a case study on driver distraction prepared by the Mobility Research Center and presented by Prof. Dr. Mohamed El-Farmawy, Professor of Transport Planning and Traffic Engineering at the Faculty and Founder of Transifec Integrated Consultancy.

Ms. Marwa Abdel-Azim, representing the British Council, also presented the funding opportunities available through the Council. Dr. Ramy Sheltout delivered a presentation outlining the objectives of the project and the principles of road safety auditing. In addition, Dr. Sherifin Moatamedi, Lecturer at Coventry University, discussed the importance of developing resilient infrastructure capable of meeting the requirements of an increasingly connected world.

The workshop also featured a virtual presentation by Ms. Heather Suarez, representing the Institution of Highways Engineers (IHE) in the United Kingdom, who highlighted the benefits and opportunities available to students through membership in the institution.

The event concluded with an interactive panel discussion focusing on proposals for the design of a specialized Master's programme in road safety. The proposed programme aims to prepare qualified professionals capable of contributing to safer transport systems and supporting sustainable development.

At the conclusion of the workshop, Dr. Mostafa Tawfik presented certificates of participation to the Faculty's students who took part in the annual training programme organized by the Mobility Research Center. The training programme provides students with practical training on specialized software and applications used in the fields of Transport Planning and Traffic Engineering.
