Course Aims- Extending pre-senior civil engineering students’ knowledge of structural and material behvaiour to cover design of steel elements and structures. - Getting the students closer to applicable design problems related to steel structures. - Building the students’ engineering design sense through different practical applications.

Introduction, systems and uses, materials and design philosophies, type of Loads, sections classification, slenderness ratio and slenderness parameter, in-plane and out-of-plane buckling lengths. Design of tension and compression members in roof trusses. Types of bolt grades. Design of pre-tensioned and non pretensioned bolted connections under shear, tension, and combined shear and tension. Types and methods of welding. Design of welded connections. Design of laterally supported, and laterally unsupported floor beams and their connections. Design of hot-rolled and cold-formed roof purlins and tie rods. -
