Engineering Hydrology
What Will Learn?
-
Course AimsHydrology as a general science studies the waters of the Earth in terms of occurrences, circulation, distribution, and control. In addition, it considers the water properties such as the chemical composition, physical attributes, and the interaction with the environment. Engineering Hydrology focuses on the applications of the hydrologic science to solve engineering problems. Course contents include atmospheric vapor, evaporation, types of rainfall, statistical analysis of rainfall (IDF curves and design storms), hydro-morphology (watershed delineation, morphological parameters, travel time parameters). Infiltration methods (Horton’s method and SCS method). Surface runoff calculations: peak flow estimate (rational method), runoff hydrographs and mass curves (the unit hydrograph method). Flood control structures: storage and detention works, road crossing works, direction change works (diversion), sediment traps, and urban storm water drainage systems. Subsurface (groundwater) hydrology: soil-water relations, characteristics and types of aquifers, well hydraulics, and groundwater control systems. The role of GIS in engineering hydrology. Course tutorials provide students with technical skills and hands-on contact with selected analysis and design software via both assignments and a long project/seminar.
