What Will Learn?

  • Course Aims
    By the end of this course, students will be able to: - Recognize the concept of "Urban Renewal" and its interlinked concepts such as, regeneration, revitalization, gentrification, redevelopment, and rehabilitation. - Understand the social, economic and legal aspects of urban renewal. Identify the reasons of deterioration of the urban environment specifically in the developing countries. - Identify the typology of slums and squatter/informal areas - Evoke the urban upgrading and development policies with focus on the urban renewal approach - Analyze the successes and failures of urban renewal - Get the differences and similarities of global and local dimensions of urban renewal.

    Reasons of deterioration of the urban environment, types of slums and squatters, the historical context for urban deterioration, urban upgrading and development policies, urban spatial dynamics, potential roles of government intervention, system governance, consequences of urban restructuring, urban renewal practice, policy approaches.
