What Will Learn?

Course AimsBy the end of the course the students will be able to: • Gain insight into and a level of understanding of the origin and evolution of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process • Explore key aspects of the EIA process and review selected methodologies designed to identify potential impacts • Understand the relationship between planning and EIA and its implementation in Egypt • Introduce related issues: Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) and the contribution of EIA and SEA to sustainable development • Describe thoroughly the environmental settings in order to be able to predict and assess the impacts associated with a proposed action, i.e. prepare "environmental inventory" • Work in teams (team work)

This course introduces the contemporary environmental problem (pollution, environmental degradation, desertification, erosion, climate change) - Environment as an important factor in the planning process - Conflicts leading to ignoring the environmental factor in planning (political and economic factors) - Development alternatives, Resources, Input, output, Renewable Energy, Green Infrastructure - The concept and aims of sustainable development, Types - Strong sustainability, weak sustainability, The concept of sustainable development (aims and types) - Natural protectorates (definition, planning process of the surrounding areas).
