What Will Learn?

Course AimsThis course studies the fundamentals of design and operation of Switchgear and Substations. Topics include power system protection relaying philosophy and protection of transmission lines, rotating machines, and power transformers. It studies circuit breakers: types, construction, performance and ratings, design features, operating characteristics. It also includes: Substation types, functions, Single line diagram, configurations, Layout, equipments and grounding.

Switchgear equipment, Main switchgear schemes, Circuit Interrupters: Fuses: Types and Applications, Circuit breakers types : Air, Air-blast, minimum Oil circuit breaker, SF6 and Vacuum, Construction, Performance and ratings, Interruption of fault currents and arcs in circuit breakers. Switching transients and their control. Lightning arrestors. Functions of substation. Types and essential features of substations. H.V Substation equipment, single line diagram, and layout. H.V substation configurations and ratings. H.V substation structure. H.V substation control and protection. SCADA and SAS systems in H.V substations. Design of H.V substation grounding system. -
