Water Quality Modelling

Most water resources are subjected to threats of contaminants. As the two major sources of freshwater in Egypt are the Nile River, and the groundwater, modelling their water quality is a crucial need. Within this research topic, many case studies were investigated to simulate the motion of contaminants and present solutions. The southern reach of the Nile River will be first studied as it receives considerable amounts of agricultural, industrial, and municipal wastes at different sites along its mainstream. The goal is to simulate contaminant spill in the studied part of the Nile River to determine the vulnerable area and assess the correspondent real travel time. Two scenarios of spill event were chosen and studied using the HEC-RAS hydrodynamic and water quality modules. Following model calibration, the spill scenarios were run to simulate the transport of 500 tons of spilt phosphate into the Nile River. While for the groundwater compartment, Dayrout city is selected to be the case study. the water quality index (WQI), with its correlation to different water quality parameters, and Gibbs and Piper diagrams were used to analyse groundwater suitability for drinking and irrigation purposes. Results of (WQI) values showed low groundwater quality for drinking within urban area west of the Ibrahimmia Canal. Whereas in the east of Ibrahimmia Canal values are accepted and only needs disinfection. All the boreholes show good indices for irrigation water quality. 
Also applied projects had been conducted to simulate the hydrodynamic dissipation of brine water in the sea and especially in the Gulf of Suez, where most of petroleum companies are located. From the near field simulation modelling the full design of the effluent pipeline was determined. Using the far field simulation hydrodynamic modelling, the different wind and currents scenarios were studied to cope with the regulations of the EEAA.
