What Will Learn?

Course AimsThe aim of this course is to provide students with the needed knowledge and skills, which enable them to get closer to various applicable design problems related to steel bridges and build the students’ engineering design sense through different practical applications by: • Study different types of steel bridges with different material of construction. • Study the structural systems in longitudinal and transverse direction of the steel bridge. • Learn the Design philosophy. • Study Types of bridge bearings. • Study the composite bridges. • Study the concept of beam grids.

Basics of bridge design, i.e. Structural systems, layout of bridges, loads on road and railway bridges. Design of steel bridges for flexure, shear, combined action, fatigue considerations. Design and detailing of different bridge decks i.e. orthotropic plate decks and composite decks. Curtailment of flange plates in main girders. Design and detailing of field splice connection. Design of beam grids, composite bridges and shear connectors. Design of wind bracing members, and bridge bearings. -
