On October 29, 2023, the USAID-funded Center of Excellence for Energy hosted their biannual stakeholder’s meeting convening faculty, energy industry, and governmental leaders to foster collaboration, discuss current trends and chart a course for the future of the energy sector. Operated by Arizona State University in partnerships with Ain Shams, Mansoura, and Aswan universities, the center aims to support Egypt in reaching its energy transition goals by increasing higher education capacity to develop a skilled workforce and produce innovative, and pertinent energy research. During the meeting, the center presented its strategic goals and accomplishments from the last year, which included curriculum and instructional methods development, advancing laboratory space, a robust exchange and training program, and initiation of binational research projects. The center hosted a panel of energy industry professionals who opened a discussion about the energy transition, sustainability goals and progress, and digitization trends. It was determined that undergraduate students would benefit from more experiential, hands-on learning and complementary energy courses in policy, leadership, and entrepreneurship, both of which are key focus areas for the center. It was also agreed that in order to successfully meet the country’s energy transition goals, it is vital to strengthen the ties between academia and the energy industry. Research projects, which were recently selected for grants from the center, and new research ideas, were presented, and the participants were reminded that a second research project call for proposals is currently open.
