What Will Learn?

  • Course Aims
    The aim of this course is to introduce the student to the fundamentals of the transportation planning process, traffic engineering studies, and the main elements of the geometric design of highways. It provides the basic of the highway design for different types of roads such as freeways, multilane and local roads and how to design each of these types. Finally, it also introduces the material characteristics of highways construction including asphalt layers.

Stages of the urban and regional transportation plans, Data collection process required for the transportation plans, Stages of the travel demand forecasting process using the traditional sequential approach. Traffic Engineering: introduction to traffic engineering, traffic volume studies, Traffic flow parameters and characteristics, level of service analysis. Highway Engineering: classification of roads, basic principles of highways design, cross section elements, vehicles and drivers’ characteristics.
