Urban Regeneration Design Studio
What Will Learn?
-
Course AimsThis design Studio provides a framework for students to expand their design thinking using Cairo and other Egyptian cities as a laboratory. Students will meet the challenge of applying the concept of sustainable development in the society through their designs. They have to plan, design and maintain with respect to the surrounding environment from built and natural environment taking into consideration the vision of sustainable development, which is known globally, among other things, the reduction of energy- and resource use and environmental impact; i.e. reduce our ecological footprint. Studio pedagogy discusses “site” not as a given but as a value-laden construct that symbolizes multiple causes shaping the process and products of Urban Design. Through this design studio, students will explore methods of representing urban sites and their multi-scalar, multi-valued systemic linkages beyond normative borders. Three objectives guide the studio research: to nurture a design process specific to existing urban environments, to critically consider site and program, and to interrogate the role of Urban Design in service to the public as a client.
