Road Vehicle Dynamics
What Will Learn?
-
Course AimsThe course aims to develop students’ understanding of vehicle steering and handling characteristics, including steering mechanisms, cornering performance, directional stability, understeer, oversteer, and neutral steer. It also aims to introduce the principles of vehicle ride dynamics and road-induced vibrations, with emphasis on their effects on vehicle performance and driver/passenger comfort. Students will develop the ability to construct and analyze mathematical models of vehicle vibration systems, particularly the quarter-car model, and use MATLAB/Simulink to investigate the influence of suspension parameters on ride quality. The course also aims to enable students to assess vehicle ride comfort using appropriate vibration measures, human response criteria, and relevant international standards, while developing an appreciation of the importance of suspension design and vibration control in achieving safe, stable, and comfortable vehicles.
