Protection relaying philosophy and fundamental considerations (zones of protection, primary and backup protection), Effects of short-circuits on power systems, Basic elements of trip circuit, Current and potential transformers. Hardware organization in integrated protection systems, Classification of protective relays, principle of operation and construction: Electromechanical relays, Static relays, Digital relays. Types of protection systems: Overcurrent protection, Distance protection, Differential protection, Reverse power protection.
