English Description
The course covers the principles of power dispatch, and generation economics, to identify the foundations of energy system design. The principles of sustainability in the context of energy engineering. The critical issues for sustainability: population, water, food and growth, and the relationships between these systems and energy use. The complex nature of sustainable energy looking at the world energy system of the past, present, and future and the urgent challenge of addressing climate change. Economic return on energy invested (EROI) and the costs of energy. Demand management and energy efficiency. An overview of conventional fossil and nuclear energy. Review of the technology and implementation; cycles; history; current status; and future prospects for renewable resources including geothermal, hydro, wind, solar and biomass. The issues involved in the concept of a hydrogen economy. The course has a term project where students apply their learning into practically solving real energy challenges. -
