Engineering Measurements and Sensors
What Will Learn?
-
Course AimsBy the end of the course, the student should be able to: - Get introduction to sensors and measurement systems. - Learn deep knowledge of the concepts of error and calibration of measuring instruments. - Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of different measuring systems. - Employ appropriate instrumentation to measure motion (encoder, potentiometer, LVDT, accelerometer, gyroscope, IMUs, etc.), strain gauges, force. - Demonstrate sensors signal conditioning/ processing and data acquisition systems of measurement systems.
-
Course Goals
- Quality Education
- Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

English Description
Introduction to measurement systems, measurement chain elements, functional elements of measuring instruments, Measurement error types and analysis: gross error, systematic error (instrument error, environmental error, observational error), random error accuracy, precision, repeatability, uncertainty, statistical analysis of measurement errors and performance. Measuring instrument calibration and regression. Sensor types and classifications, sensing technologies (capacitive, inductive, magnetic, hall-effect, piezoelectric, optical, strain gauges, ...etc.). Sensors and transducers for measuring: temperature, pressure, flow, force such as unidirectional/multi-directional load cells, torque, power, motion ((acceleration, velocity, position, displacement, ...etc.) such as encoders, resolvers, tachometer, LVDT, ...etc.). Methods of correction for interfering and modifying inputs in measurement instruments and sensors, Sensors signal conditioning and processing: Sources of noises in the sensor signals, electromagnetic interference (EMI) and how to avoid it, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) considerations, grounding and shielding, amplifiers, filters (low-pass, high-pass, notch filter, …..etc.), multisensory fusion. Data acquisition systems of measurement systems. There will be mini-projects to develop measurement systems based on the topics taught in the course -
