Unit's Objectives and Activities

 

The reinforced concrete research unit of the faculty of engineering of Ain Shams University was established in 1995. The unit involves the reinforced concrete teaching staff members as well as their assisting team of the reinforced concrete research laboratory, including demonstrators, technicians and secretarial staff.

The unit expertise includes structural engineering designs and consultancy works, construction supervisions as well as monitoring works for public and private buildings. The unit is also specialized in loading tests on bridges, quality control testing and concrete mix designs. Furthermore, the unit accomplishes field inspections for public and private buildings and provides structural safety reports. In this respect, the unit collaborates with the other units in the faculty such as the engineering surveying consultancy unit, the soil mechanics and foundation research unit as well as the materials testing and quality control unit.

Previous Practical Experience

  • LOADING TESTS

The reinforced concrete research unit accomplishes loading tests on different types of reinforced concrete buildings, in order to assess their structural safety under working loads (service condition). In this respect, the unit undergoes loading tests on bridges in addition to several structural elements in different types of buildings, such as slabs and roofs…etc. The following sub-sections represent some of the unit's Jobs in the field.

The reinforced concrete research unit accomplishes different types of quality control destructive and non-destructive testing. In the field of destructive testing, the unit accomplishes the Concrete Core tests. On the other hand, the compressive concrete cube testing, the Shmidt Hammer as well as the Ultra Sonic testing on different types of structural elements are among the non-destructive tests the unit undergoes.
